What Is a Wart?
Warts are a common skin condition, most often found on the palms, fingers, and near the fingernails. Warts typically look like little, fleshy peas, but they may vary in size. It is also common for warts to appear in groups near the elbows and knees. Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Although warts are harmless for the most part, they may be annoying and unattractive. Over-the-counter wart removal products aren't usually enough, which is why board-certified physician Dr. Laura E. Babe provides wart removal at her practice in Ann Arbor, MI. If you have a wart or other skin growth you want removed, schedule a consultation at Laura E. Babe, MD, PLC where you can also learn more about our personalized medical practice. Laura E. Babe, MD, PLC is affiliated with MDVIP, a national network of concierge-like primary care physicians, providing personalized primary care with a membership. Our practice devotes more time to fewer patients so we can personally address your concerns and conditions when you need treatment.
What Are the Treatment Options for Warts?
Even after a first treatment, warts can reoccur so it is necessary to find the best treatment to minimize future outbreaks. Freezing a wart is a common therapy and is performed with success. With this method, Dr. Babe uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart away. A blister will form around it and the frozen cells will fall off within a week. Sometimes, more than one treatment is necessary, especially for larger warts. Repeat treatments may be scheduled every 1 to 3 weeks.
Freezing the wart for removal is a safe and effective method, but like any medical treatment, it's important to understand the process and follow post-treatment care instructions to ensure the best outcome. Aftercare instructions may include keeping the area clean and dry, using a bandage, and not picking at the blister. Some common side effects include pain, redness, and blistering. Less common side effects can include scarring and changes in skin color.
What Are the Symptoms of a Wart?
While they can develop on any part of the body, warts are most commonly found on the hands and feet where they may cause discomfort or pain, especially if they're located in areas that are subject to pressure or friction. Symptoms of warts include:
- Bumps that are fleshy feeling, tender, and grainy on top
- Areas that may be rough to the touch
- Plantar warts that appear on the bottom of the feet
- Foot warts that may be light brown or flesh-colored bumps speckled with small, black spots
- Flat warts that might appear to be smoother or smaller and most common on the face and legs
