What Is a Wart?

Warts are a common skin condition, often appearing on the palms, fingers, and around the fingernails. They usually resemble small, fleshy bumps but can vary in size and may appear in clusters near the elbows and knees. Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). While generally harmless, they can be bothersome and unsightly. Over-the-counter treatments are often insufficient, which is why board-certified physician Dr. Laura E. Babe provides professional wart removal at her Ann Arbor, MI practice.

If you have a wart or other skin growth you wish to remove, schedule a consultation at Laura E. Babe, MD, PLC, where you can also learn more about our personalized medical practice. Laura E. What Are the Treatment Options for Warts?

Warts can sometimes reappear even after initial treatment, so it’s important to choose the most effective approach to reduce future outbreaks. Freezing, or cryotherapy, is a common and successful treatment. In this method, Dr. Babe applies liquid nitrogen to the wart, causing a blister to form around it. The frozen cells typically fall off within a week. Larger warts may require more than one treatment, with repeat sessions scheduled every 1 to 3 weeks.

Freezing warts is a safe and effective option, but it is important to follow post-treatment care instructions for the best results. Aftercare may include keeping the area clean and dry, using a bandage, and avoiding picking at the blister. Common side effects include pain, redness, and blistering, while less common side effects may include scarring or changes in skin color.

What Are the Symptoms of a Wart?

Warts can develop anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the hands and feet, where they may cause discomfort or pain, especially in areas subject to pressure or friction. Symptoms of warts include fleshy, tender bumps with a grainy surface; rough areas to the touch; plantar warts on the soles of the feet; foot warts that appear as light brown or flesh-colored bumps with small black specks; and flat warts, which are smoother, smaller, and often found on the face and legs.
